Metal Sheds - Comparing Types and Materials
Just open the garage or look in the closet and you will see many things that need a place to be kept. It is so easy to accumulate possessions and outgrow storage areas. There are just so many garage sales we can all have, plus there are many things that are purchased because of necessity. So what is the answer? May I suggest a metal shed?
Metal sheds are actually a way to add a little value to your home, plus an avenue to keep items from becoming lost or broken. Yard tools hung neatly, pool equipment lined up in a row, and the lawn mower parked out of the rain is a satisfying change.
Let's consider the different standard shed types.
METAL SHEDS:
Primarily made from steel, these sheds are durable and typically have a life of at least 10 years. My neighbor has one that is at least 15 years old and still in good condition. Metal yields a low maintenance shed, primarily only requiring a coat of paint now and again.
Metal sheds can be purchased fully constructed, partially built, or as a kit. The superstructure is typically either metal or wood. When constructed with framing lumber, the sides and roof are made of metal. If the superstructure is all metal then the entire shed is made of metal. Both types of sheds can have shelving and hooks installed to gain more storage space. A wooden superstructure is easier to add homemade shelves to, as the wood is easy to nail to. The metal superstructure sheds have several different types designed for them.
PVC VINYL SHEDS:
This type of shed is pretty tough. Vinyl sheds do not dent or break very easily. These sheds tend to be smaller than their wooden and metal cousins. Also shelving is not as easily installed as in one with a wooden frame. Color choices are usually along the green, tan, and gray lines. There is no need to paint them, but on the other hand you are stuck with whatever color they are originally.
WOODEN SHEDS:
Wood sheds are made with a wood superstructure and wood siding. Roofs can be of either metal or asphalt shingles. They are more maintenance, but you also have the option of changing the color whenever you change your home's exterior design. Paint has to be applied every few years. Also care has to be paid to repair any rotten siding boards.
Which ever type of shed you choose, be sure to first estimate how much space you will need and the type of things you are planning to store. Hand tools such as rakes and shovels need a taller area to stand up in. Flower pots and children's toys could even be in more of an outdoor storage trunk. And larger items like riding mowers and bikes need a larger area.
But all in all metal sheds are a good investment to protect your treasures and also improve your home.
